Once upon a time there lived a
very stingy moneylender in a region.
This gentleman had no shortage of money but was very stingy by nature
and would go to the market and try to buy things at a much lower price.
One day he went to the fish shop
in the market and asked the fishmonger the price of the fish and he was
surprised that the price was too high.
Then the moneylender told the fish shop owner that he had not bought
fish at such a high price, so why would he sell it at such a high price? Then the small fishmonger told the
moneylender that if he went to the big fish market and bought fish, he might
get it at a much lower price. After
hearing his words, the moneylender went to the big market and asked the
wholesale fish seller the price of the fish. The fish seller said the price of
fish. In this case too, after hearing
the price, the moneylender asked, "The price of fish should have been much
lower because this fish is not bought at such a high price." Then advised the fishmonger that if he wanted
free fish, he would have to go to the river and catch it.
On hearing this, the moneylender
thought to himself, "If it is really possible to get it without paying any
money, then it is better to go to the river." The moneylender then set out to go to the
river and after going some distance he reached the river and went down to the
river for fishing but after a while the current of the river increased so much
that he was in danger. The moneylender,
who was in danger in the middle of the river, called out to God in his mind and
promised that he would feed 100 Brahmins if he could survive the danger. The
moneylender did not know how to swim. Due to increased self-confidence and started
a little on the bank of the river after overcoming the danger of the river as a
result of spreading his arms and legs, then the moneylender thought to himself
that is this not my stupidity? Just why
should I go to feed 100 Brahmins, so I made a vow to God in my mind that He
would feed Brahmins to 51 people instead of 100 people. The moneylender closed his eyes and tried to
come back to the river bank, and when he came nearer to the river bank from
danger, he opened his eyes and saw that bank came close to him. He again promised to himself that he will
feed 11 people instead of 51 Brahmins. Saying this, he started his journey again to
reach the shore and as he was about to reach the shore, this time he thought
again in his own way and thought why only 11 people? he will feed only one
Brahmin. Later he came to the bank of
the river and slowly got up from the river and reached home but the thought of
feeding Brahmins remained in his head.
After returning home, this time
he started looking for a Brahmin who would eat the least and spend the
least. He sent people from village to
village and after searching in various ways he finally found a slender
weak-bodied Brahmin and he went there and invited the Brahmin to chant alone. At this time the moneylender asked the Brahmin,
"How much or how much food can he eat?" Hearing this question, the Brahmin easily
understood that the moneylender was 'a very stingy moneylender'. The Brahmin then accepted the invitation and
told the moneylender that he was accustomed to eating very little food and that
he must go to defend the invitation. On
hearing this, the moneylender thought himself very clever and returned home
happy that he had chosen the Brahmin.
However, the Brahmin happily
went home with all the coins and other belongings after the meal, but he
devised a plan so that the moneylenders could get the news. When moneylender returned home, he was very
upset when he heard everything from his wife and went to the Brahmin's house
with a stick.
The Brahmin taught his wife as a
precaution that as soon as the stingy moneylender came to her house, she should
be covered with a white cloth and cried loudly and it was said that the Brahmin
was dead. Later, when the moneylender
went to the Brahmin's house, he saw that the Brahmin's wife was crying and that
Brahman was covered in a white cloth while he was dead. Moneylender was very
sad to see everything at that time and again asked him to arrange for his
funeral with some money to the Brahmin's wife.
The moneylender further said that he would go home and deliver many more
daily necessities to the Brahmin's wife.
As a result, for about two or
three months, the Brahmin and his wife began to live happily and peacefully,
and the Brahmin decided that he would not cut his beard or mustache and would
do more.
About three or four months
later, the Brahmin saw another empty day with a long beard and met moneylender’s
wife at home. The moneylender’s wife was
surprised to see this Brahmin and asked how he came if he was dead.
In reply the Brahmin said that
he came to meet him directly from heaven and he came to inform that the
daughter of the moneylender who died is now in heaven. The Brahmin already knew
the matter of their daughter. The Brahmin said that his daughter had become
very thin in heaven and was very ill for not having some good food so the
moneylender's wife should send a lot of food for her daughter. After hearing this for the daughter, the
moneylender's wife became very emotional and sent some food in a car with the
Brahmin and asked him to come next time.
In this way the Brahmin kept coming a few times and started earning good
food in the name of that girl.
